ESSENTIAL SKILLS MODULE Overview

OVERVIEW

7 ESSENTIAL SKILLS ...

the ideal Skill Building Sequence

So far in this BATTING ESSENTIALS Program, we have looked at the learning theory that supports our coaching. This has included Coaching Principles, how to provide Effective Feedback and an in-depth look at the essential Concepts.  Each of these components supports the coaching we provide our players and, when used in combination, creates a more effective learning environment for the player.

In this ESSENTIAL SKILLS module, we take an in-depth look at the 7 ESSENTIAL SKILLS that make up the BATTING ESSENTIALS Program

From experience, I have found there is an ideal 'skill building' sequence in which each of the skill sets should be taught – the sections in this module are presented in this sequence.

Why are these the ESSENTIAL SKILLS?

These 7 ESSENTIAL SKILLS combine to make up, what I consider to be, an essential foundation or basic batting technique.

This foundation provides beginning and developing players with the building blocks on which more complex movements and techniques can be developed.

Frame of REFERENCE

FRAME OF REFERENCE
00:00 / 01:34

To coach someone (in anything), you need to have an ideal or an end goal that you are coaching towards. In other words, before you can begin coaching, you should first have some kind of idea of what a skilled performance looks like – in coaching terms, this is referred to as a FRAME OF REFERENCE

Frame of reference.png

The FRAME OF REFERENCE gives you something to coach towards – a set of standards, some kind of end point or an outcome we are moving our player towards.

In a coaching situation, each time your player plays a shot, you compare the player’s movements with your FRAME OF REFERENCE (the ideal performance).

Once the skill has been performed, we need to evaluate what parts of the player's movements matched the ideal skill performance and what part of the player's movements were different.

The difference between the player's movements and the ideal movements is where the ‘coaching’ needs to take place! Gradually, through our feedback and continued repetitions for the player, we try to guide the player's movements towards our FRAME OF REFERENCE.

The 7 components contained in this module, provide an in-depth look at each of the 7 ESSENTIAL SKILLS and will help to give you a FRAME OF REFERENCE for your coaching.
