COACHING PRINCIPLES MODULE
Overview

Before you begin COACHING ...
Before you begin coaching, it is worth taking some time to understand some of the coaching techniques being used throughout this coaching program.
As you progress through the program, you will notice that the COACHING PRINCIPLES I am using here (to guide your learning), are the same methods and techniques used in the LESSON PLANS and you will use when coaching a player.
LEARNING METHODS

CHUNKING

SCAFFOLDING

WHOLE / PART / WHOLE

SKILL BUILDING
SKILL BUILDING
The idea behind SKILL BUILDING is to start a beginning player off by providing them with the skills and information that is most relevant right now in order for the player to begin making progress.

The starting point for each player is based on the current skills and knowledge of the player.

The coach needs to start at the start and gradually and sequentially build-up the player's skills and knowledge.

For any player, a coach always needs to assess:
-
What skills and knowledge does this player currently have?
-
What are the skills and knowledge this player needs to know right now in order to make progress?

The player is then provided with the information along with an opportunity to put the new information into practice.

The coach then has to assess:
-
What is the next piece of information or skill development – in the skill building sequence – the player needs – and so on.
CHUNKING
CHUNKING is simply a way of presenting complex (or detailed information) via smaller 'bite-sized' pieces (chunks) – this can help to make information easier to absorb and understand.

These smaller information chunks are presented gradually and sequentially to allow the player to learn, apply and understand the information before being presented with the next chunk of information (in the sequence).
SCAFFOLDING
We want players to be individual learners with the eventual goal of being able to self-monitor and correct. However, sometimes a player struggles to understand a skill or concept ...

This is where we use a SCAFFOLDING technique!

By SCAFFOLDING, the coach essentially provides more support to the learning. This may involve further explanations or demonstrations, by the coach or other players, to further assist the player grasp the technique or concept better.

Essentially, SCAFFOLDING is extra assistance provided by the coach to assist with the player's progression in situations where the player is not making the progression expected.
WHOLE / PART / WHOLE
WHOLE / PART / WHOLE is a 3-step coaching process used to introduce a new technique (or movement pattern) to a player.
WHOLE / PART / WHOLE
To understand a new skill, a player needs to know what a good performance of the skill looks like before attempting it themselves.
The coach begins by showing the player what the WHOLE process looks like (for example – what the full movement or motion should look like at proper match speed).

Both the coach and the player need to know what a good performance of the skill looks like and a demonstration of the skill is the most useful way of achieving this.
It is very important that the demonstration be a good representation of the skill being taught.
NOTE: If you are unable to provide a good demonstration, either find someone who can or, at least, show the player a video or photo sequence of the correct moments involved.
Use the videos and still shots, included with this program, as a representation of what a good technique looks like and how the movements should be performed.

SUMMARY
As you progress through this program, notice how each of the 4 LEARNING METHODS outlined above, have been used throughout to help guide and direct your learning.

When you reach the Lesson Plans, at the end of this training program, you will see how each of these methods (or techniques) have been incorporated into each lesson and when used in combination, result in a very powerful and effective learning experience for the player.
