POWER
00:00 / 02:20

In the early phases of learning, the focus for beginning players should be on developing the proper techniques (movement patterns).

Good movement mechanics (which is the subject of biomechanics), combined with proper Timing, goes a long way to producing the required force in shots

My saying to beginning players who want more power is –

"You DON'T hit a ball hard by trying to hit it hard!"

By trying to hit too hard, players generally lose the shape of their technique and often mis-hit or mis-time the ball – this results in a less forceful shot being played.

You hit harder by making sure your technique is good and you are contacting the ball in the correct hitting zone (good timing). In this way, all of your forces travel through the ball and you have a better chance of finding the middle of the bat – this adds up to a more forceful shot being played.

As players develop, both physically and technically, they can look to develop their hitting power

POWER IS DEVELOPED THROUGH 3 AREAS ...

PROPER TECHNIQUE

Use of proper techniques (based on solid biomechanics) allowing each body part to move in the correct sequence –  enabling higher bat speeds and body forces to move through the ball.

GOOD TIMING

Contacting the ball in the middle of the bat and in the correct Hitting zone.

DEVELOPMENT OF PHYSICAL STRENGTH

A physically stronger player is able to generate more body force and higher bat speeds (to a point!).
